To start, I only recommend a few universal supplements to all people. These include a multi-vitamin, a multi-mineral, vitamin D3, fish oil, and sodium bicarbonate. Remember these nutritional supplements are in addition to taking at least the initial steps to holistic self-care which include making some improvements in basic nutrition (improving water quantity and then quality while adding Sea Salt to foods), exercise (balancing types of exercise), stress-relief (meditation and relaxing exercise) and basic living (more natural grooming products). *remember that conventional forms of baking soda tend to be stabilized with aluminum, so please avoid these.
What do I personally recommend:
Take one tablespoon between 90 minutes and 20 minutes before exercise when your stomach feels relatively empty. Immediately follow your exercise with half a tablespoon. On days when you do not work out you can take one teaspoon upon waking in the morning, as your stomach should be empty. I also recommend another teaspoon prior to sleeping if your stomach is somewhat empty.
This super-affordable supplement is more than just something you can take to help sports performance or prevent cancer, it is actually generated and used by the body to preserve it's intended state of function. Taking sodium bicarbonate is a way of supporting your body's homeostatic mechanisms that are designed to preserve the body and enable you to maximize production, performance and reach physical potential.
I am not touting sodium bicarbonate as some "magic pill" because this does not exist and my personal holistic-minded perspective on "health" and self-care uses a well-rounded approach including overall nutrition, balance of and within exercise, stress-relief and basic living strategies. I simply believe that including sodium bicarbonate along with taking some basic steps in those fields of lifestyle science can significantly empower virtually anyone in taking control of their "health".
Remember, our "health" is a dynamic, constantly fluctuating state of function within our whole 'being'. Our whole 'being' is composed of mind, body and spirit which interact and greatly impact each other. Promoting an alkaline pH within our body by using sodium bicarbonate on a regular basis makes complete sense, especially when you consider that it is very affordable, virtually free of side-effects (unless you are very salt and mineral deficient, in this case some diarrhea is possible) and really easy to include in your present lifestyle.
